When students walk into tutoring classes, they often carry invisible baggage.
Notebooks full of red marks.
Memories of being rushed.
The belief that everyone else understands except me.
I once taught a Grade 8 boy who refused to read aloud. During school hours, he was “well-behaved,” which teachers often interpreted as “doing fine.” In reality, he was surviving by staying invisible. In our first session, he read one paragraph in nearly five minutes, apologizing after every line.
“I’m bad at English,” he said casually, like a fact, not an opinion.
That sentence always tells me more than any test ever could.
The Turning Point: Small Wins, Carefully Built
Confidence does not arrive dramatically.
It sneaks in.
It comes when a student answers correctly without looking for approval.
When they say, “Wait ! let me try again,” instead of “I don’t know.”
When mistakes stop feeling like evidence of failure and start feeling like part of thinking.
One girl struggled terribly with descriptive writing. Her sentences were flat, factual, and safe. One day, after weeks of guided questioning, she wrote: “The classroom smelled like chalk and tired mornings.”
She looked up, surprised, as if someone else had written it.
“Is that… good?” she asked.
That question was confidence knocking, unsure if it was welcome.
